Hey there! I’m Patty. If you’re reading this, you’re probably somewhere between eight and twelve years old. That’s a wild age, right? You’re not a "little kid" anymore, but you’re also not quite a teenager. You’re starting to ask big questions, like who you really are and if you actually "fit" anywhere.
My friend Rex and I talk about this all the time. Rex is a bit of a deep thinker, and he’s helped me realize that our lives aren't just accidents. They are built. My dad, David, says that God is the Master Architect. He doesn’t just "make" things; He designs them with a purpose, a foundation, and a story.
Welcome to the Identity Exploration guide. Let’s get into the blueprints of who you are.
Chapter 1: God Knows You
Rex and I were standing in the middle of a huge, crowded stadium last summer. I felt like a tiny speck of dust. "Rex," I whispered, "how could God ever find me in here?" Rex just pointed up at the sky and then back at me. "Patty, He doesn’t have to 'find' you. He never lost sight of you. He has the GPS coordinates of your soul."
Scripture:"O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether." (Psalm 139:1–4 ESV)
Truth Statement: You are the most well-known project in the Master’s portfolio.
Let’s Talk About It:
Does it feel scary or comforting to know God knows every thought you have?
If God knows everything about you and still loves you, what does that say about His heart?
Try This: Write your name in the middle of a piece of paper. Around it, write five things that only you and God know about your personality or your dreams.
Prayer:Lord, thank You for seeing me. Even when I feel invisible to the world, I know I am fully seen by You. Thank You for knowing my name and my heart. Amen.
Chapter 2: God Made You On Purpose
Rex was looking at some blueprints for a new bridge. "See these lines, Patty? Every single one is there for a reason. If the architect just threw lines on the paper for fun, the bridge would fall." It hit me then: I’m not a "oops" or a "maybe." I’m a "definitely."
Scripture:"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5 ESV)
Truth Statement: Your existence is a deliberate act of divine will, not a biological coincidence.
Let’s Talk About It:
What do you think "consecrated" means? (Hint: It means set apart for something special!)
Knowing God planned you before you were born, how does that change how you look at your life today?
Try This: Find a seed (a bean, a sunflower seed, or even an acorn). Hold it in your hand. Remind yourself that just like the tree is already "planned" inside that seed, God’s plan for you started before anyone could see it.
Prayer:Father, thank You for planning my life before the world even began. Help me to trust that I am here on purpose. Amen.
Chapter 3: Wonderfully Made
One day, Rex was explaining how a building’s frame has to be perfect for the rest of the house to stand. He told me that my body and my soul have an "architecture" too. I looked at my hands and thought about how many things they can do, draw, climb, hug, and write. It’s actually kind of amazing.
Scripture:"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." (Psalm 139:13–14 ESV)
Truth Statement: You are a custom-built masterpiece, engineered with precision and love.

What is one part of how you were "made" (a talent, a physical trait, or a way you think) that you really like?
Why do we sometimes struggle to believe we are "wonderfully made"?
Try This: Look in the mirror and say out loud: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Do it until your soul "knows it very well."
Prayer:Lord, thank You for the way You knitted me together. I praise You because Your work is wonderful, and that includes me. Amen.
Chapter 4: Your Personality Is Not a Mistake
I used to think I was too loud. Then I’d try to be quiet like Rex, but then I felt like I was exploding. Rex told me, "Patty, a hammer isn’t a 'mistake' because it isn't a screwdriver. It’s just a different tool for a different job." My "loudness" might just be the energy God gave me to lead!
Scripture:"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is it the same God who empowers them all in everyone." (1 Corinthians 12:4–6 ESV)
Truth Statement: Your temperament is a specialized tool designed for your unique calling.

Are you more of a "hammer" (bold, direct) or a "level" (calm, making sure things are straight)?
How can your specific personality help people see God?
Try This: Ask a parent or a friend what "gift" they see in you (like being a good listener, being funny, or being brave). Write it down on a sticky note.
Prayer:God, thank You for my personality. Help me to use the way I think and act to bring You glory. Amen.
Chapter 5: Feelings vs. Truth
Rex and I were caught in a storm once. The clouds were so dark I forgot the sun was even there. Rex said, "The sun hasn't moved, Patty. The clouds are just feelings. The sun is the Truth." Sometimes I feel like I’m not good enough, but the Truth says God doesn’t make mistakes.
Scripture:"God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?" (Numbers 23:19 ESV)
Truth Statement: Truth is the bedrock; feelings are just the weather passing over it.
Let’s Talk About It:
What is a "feeling" that sometimes tries to lie to you about who you are?
How can we remind ourselves of God’s Truth when we are having a "cloudy" day?
Try This: Draw a picture of a house on a big rock. Label the rock "God's Word" and the clouds "My Feelings."
Prayer:Lord, when my feelings are confusing, help me stand on the rock of Your Truth. You never change Your mind about me. Amen.
Chapter 6: When Life Hurts
There was a week where everything went wrong. I failed a math quiz, and my best friend was mean to me. I felt broken. Rex showed me a piece of stained glass. "See this? It’s made of broken pieces, but when the light hits it, it’s the most beautiful thing in the room."
Scripture:"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18 ESV)
Truth Statement: Brokenness is not the end of your story; it is the site of God’s greatest reconstruction.
Let’s Talk About It:
Why is it hard to feel God’s presence when we are sad?
How does God use "broken" things to show His love?
Try This: If you have a scar (on your knee or elbow), look at it. It’s a sign that you healed. Remind yourself that God heals our hearts, too.
Prayer:Jesus, thank You for being near me when I’m sad. Thank You for fixing the broken parts of my heart with Your love. Amen.
Chapter 7: The Platypus Lesson
Rex loves the platypus. "It has a duck bill, a beaver tail, and it lays eggs but it's a mammal," he says. "People think it’s a mistake, but God says it’s a masterpiece of 'Both/And'." Sometimes I feel like a mix of things that don't belong together, but that’s just God’s unique genius.
Scripture:"And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good." (Genesis 1:31 ESV)
Truth Statement: You are a "Both/And" creation, uniquely complex and perfectly intentional.
Let’s Talk About It:
Do you ever feel like you don't fit into one specific "box" (like "athlete" or "artist")?
Why do you think God likes variety so much?
Try This: Think of two things you love that seem totally different (like "I love video games AND I love nature"). Celebrate that you are a "Both/And" person!
Prayer:God, thank You for making me unique. Help me to be okay with not fitting into a box, because I fit perfectly in Your plan. Amen.
Chapter 8: You Are God’s Masterpiece
Rex told me the Greek word for masterpiece is Poiema. It’s where we get the word "poem." I realized then that my life is like a song or a poem that God is writing. Every day is a new line.
Scripture:"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)
Truth Statement: You are not a product; you are a work of art.
Let’s Talk About It:
If your life was a poem, what would the title be?
What are some "good works" God might have prepared for you to do today?
Try This: Create something today, a drawing, a LEGO tower, or a song. While you make it, think about how much care you are putting into it. That’s how much care God puts into you.
Prayer:Father, thank You for making me Your workmanship. Help me to "walk in" the good things You have planned for me today. Amen.
Chapter 9: Identity in Christ
Rex and I were talking about kings and queens. He said, "Patty, we don’t need a crown to be royalty. We belong to the King of Kings." That means we have a family we belong to that is bigger than anything on earth.
Scripture:"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)
Truth Statement: Your primary identity is "Child of God", a title that can never be revoked.
Let’s Talk About It:
What does it mean to be "God’s own possession"?
How should a "royal priest" treat other people?
Try This: Find a small stone. Keep it in your pocket today to remind you that you are a "living stone" built into God’s family.
Prayer:Lord, thank You for choosing me. Thank You for bringing me out of the dark and into Your light. Help me to live like I belong to You. Amen.
Chapter 10: Living Confidently
Rex and I were looking out from a high cliff. It was a long way down, but I wasn't scared because I knew the ground was solid. "When you know whose you are," Rex said, "you can stand anywhere."
Scripture:"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9 ESV)
Truth Statement: Confidence is not believing in yourself; it is trusting in the One who built you.
Let’s Talk About It:
What is one thing you are nervous about right now?
How does knowing God is "with you wherever you go" make you feel more courageous?
Try This: Stand up as tall as you can. Take a deep breath. Say, "I am strong and courageous because God is with me."
Prayer:God, thank You for Your strength. Help me to lead and live with confidence, knowing that You are my foundation. Amen.
